Antibacterial Pen

Around 5,000 patients die every year as a result of infections contracted whilst inside hospitals and health centres.  A study into this growing concern has revealed that pens used in hospital wards and shared by staff may cause antibiotic resistent infections.

Doctors are concerned with the danger of passing infections from ward to ward by sharing pens and having staff work in different parts of the hospital. Despite doctors and patients efforts to constantly wash their hands and keep the environment clean there is still a high risk of transmitting infections. The solution to this problem could be the Antibacterial Pen which lowers the risk of passing on harmful bacteria.

The Antibacterial Pen is a safe, non toxic sanitizer product designed for healthcare professionals such as Doctors and Nurses to use whilst they are constantly on the move throughout the hospital everyday. It simply clips on to the outside front pocket of a doctor or nurses uniform, making it very easy to access throughout the busy working day.

To use the pen it must pulled down out of the holder and twisted at the top to reveal the nib. When you have finished using the pen you simply retract the pen nib and insert it through the top of the holder, passing it through the antibacterial cleaning system, killing any harmful germs that maybe on the pen, making it clean, safe and ready to be used again.

The Antibacterial pad will provide up to 8 hours of protection against infectious diseases such as MRSA, however in order to maximise hygiene levels, the cleaning system must be replaced. When the anti bacterial pad has changed colour from blue to white it is time to change the pad, simply by opening the holder, tipping the contents away and reloading the holder with a fresh new cleaning system.

The pen and cleaning body have been designed to be mass produced from polypropylene using injection
moulding and the individual cleaning system will be manufactured from plastic coated gauze fibre.
The fibre is a material designed to house an anti bacterial solution which is slowly released as it comes into contact with another surface.

Everytime the pen passes through the holder the surface is abraised with gauze fibre which lifts bacteria and neutralises the surface. The process is very simple and inexpensive to produce, it is certainly ideal for the health service and potentially other industries.

The Antibacterial Pen is a simple solution to such an enormous global epidemic, the future of maintaining
hygiene within the health industry will rely on products such as this to combat diseases and provide an efficient service for the future.
